West Michigan
2016
Grand Haven, MI on a disposable film camera, summer 2016. The bleachers in the first picture and power plant in the third no longer exist, and the "Funky Farm" is also on its way out.
These six are also from Grand Haven in 2016, but taken with my iPhone. Looking at these pictures, it is hard to believe that living there could have been as difficult as it was. I miss the lake and the skyscapes, but I do not miss the constant feelings of inadequacy and helplessness that come with living in a midwestern seaside resort town.
2017
In 2017 I was starting to think about what kinds of pictures I want to see, versus just taking pictures of things that please my eye as I did in 2016. Some of the "weirdness" is starting to come out!
2018
2018 was my last year living in Grand Haven, which was probably good because I was running out of things to take pictures of. I started seeking out nooks and crannies that may have yet gone un-captured, and trying to take "ugly" photos of the lake (although in truth there is no such thing, of course.)
2018 was also the year that I started experimenting with black and white photography, in an effort to gain a deeper appreciation for the interactions of light and shadow. I was surprised to find that taking out the color can sometimes add to a photo, especially when there are so many shades of gray created in between the black and white.
